Two timelines. Second chances. One love.
A ragtag crew travels to the deepest reaches of space, rebuilding beautiful, broken structures to piece the past together.
Two girls meet in boarding school and fall deeply in love—only to learn the pain of loss.
With interwoven timelines and stunning art, award-winning graphic novelist Tillie Walden creates an inventive world, breathtaking romance, and an epic quest for love. On A Sunbeam is available October 2nd from First Second.
This piece on the Book Threat blog turned me on to Tillie Walden a couple months ago. She’s so good!
Why I didn’t add this to my reading list back when:
1. Too decompressed.
2. The school part was too angsty.
This was absolutely my favorite piece of media ever made. I think the blogger YesHomo describes it better than anyone, but I’d say a combination of art style, free-form story structure and heart make On a Sunbeam something exceptional. If you like Winsor McCay or Studio Ghibli, you’ll find OaS in the same ballpark, though the comparison is more a primer than anything.
